Winter 2017 Meeting – Allen Sistrunk, speaker

Monday, February 27, 2017 at the Atlanta History Center’s Woodruff Auditorium in McElreath Hall

Please join us at our new location for an evening with our speaker, R. Allen Sistrunk. Allen’s lecture is entitled “An Awakening! The Inception of the American Hydrangea Society”. Allen was born and raised in Columbus, Georgia, and attended University of Georgia, receiving a BS in Horticulture in 1978.  Allen directed the development of the 38-acre Atlanta History Center Gardens, showcasing Atlanta’s landscape history from pre-civilization to modern times through six distinct landscapes.  He has also served as Executive Director of Vines Botanical Gardens near Atlanta Georgia.  Allen was chosen to further develop the multi-residence gardens of Forbes 400, Holcombe T. Green, across the eastern U.S. In Atlanta, he also served as adjunct-faculty with University of Georgia Landscape Management Program at DeKalb University and Horticulture Instructor at Gwinnett Tech. Leaving Georgia for New York City, taking a senior position at Madelyn Simon and Associates, he designed and sold corporate and residential landscapes in Manhattan. While working with clients in lower Manhattan post 9-11 with great sensitivity, he began restoration of many corporate urban outdoor spaces.

Working the last 14 years as Director; Allen transformed a once sleepy West Palm Beach, Florida Cooperative Extension Garden into The Mounts Botanical Garden of Palm Beach County. He excelled in creating a new vision and mission along with a new University of Florida Master Plan. He greatly expanded programs, publications, new mission-related gardens and events. Allen has received awards from the American Association of Botanical Gardens and Arboretum for outstanding local efforts in horticulture and the Garden Club of America for excellence in horticulture.

We look forward to seeing you!
