‘Maximizing Hydrangea Blooming - The Seasonal Approach to Pruning’ – Mal Condon
Hydrangeas continue to be a very popular woody ornamental plant genus. Widely grown now in ever expanding locales, they create something special in so many gardens. This discussion will include the following topics; a review of the major species, critical cultural issues, and seasonal pruning best practices to maximize blooming.
This will be a digital presentation featuring detailed images and graphics relevant to all topics. A Q&A session will follow the lecture.
A lifelong gardener, Mal has been collecting, propagating, and growing hydrangeas for more than 40 years. Initially a part-time passion, his retirement from the full-time engineering world in 1999 allowed him to pursue hydrangea nurturing with total commitment. Ever the engineer, he brings a strong technical and investigative nature to the continuing development of the genus — always searching for new and better plants, evaluating their landscape performance, and finding superior ways to produce them.
He and his wife Mary Kay owned and operated Hydrangea Farm Nursery on Nantucket Island for many years. In February 2014 they relocated to Yarmouth Port on Cape Cod and are currently re-establishing a propagation / growing operation to continue the internet / mail order segment of Hydrangea Farm. Last year Mal became the Curator of the expanding Hydrangea Collection at Heritage Museums & Gardens in Sandwich, Massachusetts. In September he became President of the Cape Cod Hydrangea Society. He was also a major force for the Hydrangeas 2015 Conference and the concurrent Cape-wide Hydrangea Festival this past July.
Long a noted speaker in his former business career, Mal greatly enjoys presenting the many virtues of his favorite plant to avid garden clubs, horticultural associations, and plant societies in the US and other hydrangea-centric locations worldwide.
