2026 AHS Spring Meeting

2026 AHS Spring Meeting

Monday, April 27, 2026, at the Atlanta History Center’s Woodruff Auditorium in McElreath Hall, 7pm

O’ hydrangea, with showy sepals swaying in the breeze! Or not? Hydrangeas, admired for generations in the West, have enamored even the greatest plant people —E.H. Wilson, D. Hinkley, Dr. Michael Dirr. Hydrangea’s path from discovery to cultivation is representative of the journey many ornamental plants take to our gardens, and the efforts of botanists, plant explorers, horticulturists, and breeders involved. Dr. Olsen will overlay the historical, taxonomical, and horticultural stories of Hydrangea, as well as related and not-so-related genera, in a compelling story, highlighting the science of plant introduction and the role of institutes like the National Arboretum to enrich American landscapes.

Dr. Richard T. Olsen guides the U.S. National Arboretum in its mission to enhance the economic, environmental, and aesthetic value of ornamental and landscape plants through long-term, multi-disciplinary research, conservation of genetic resources, and interpretative gardens and displays.

But Dr. Olsen was not always an administrator. Prior to 2015, he was a research geneticist in the breeding and germplasm programs at the National Arboretum. These long-term efforts are bearing fruit as novel ornamental plant introductions are being released to the American nursery and landscape industry. Research expertise in plant breeding, genetics, and germplasm conservation provides a solid foundation for leading collaborations with industry and academic partners to facilitate new technologies and solutions for challenges facing American landscapes.

Dr. Olsen is a recognized international leader in the public garden arena, providing scientific expertise and practical knowledge to arboreta, urban forestry groups, and professional associations. Degrees in landscape design (BS; NC State University), plant physiology (MS; University of Georgia), and plant breeding (PhD; NCSU) provide a well-balanced background for directing a multi-faceted USDA research facility and public garden.
