AHS October 2023 Meeting

Monday, October 23, 2023, at the Atlanta History Center’s Woodruff Auditorium in McElreath Hall, 7pm

Join us for a fascinating conversation with Ryan McEnaney and David Roberts from Bailey Nurseries as they take us on a journey through the colorful world of plant breeding and marketing! From the earliest stages of breeding and trialing to the all-important process marketing and producing enough plants for sales, they'll provide an insider’s look at the pathway to introducing new hydrangea varieties. With their combined expertise and enthusiasm, they'll also be sharing some of their favorite new introductions – so be sure to bring your green thumbs and excitement for what’s to come with hydrangeas!

Ryan McEnaney is a fifth-generation family member leading Marketing at Bailey Nurseries, as well as a garden designer and author. He also serves as spokesperson for Bailey’s consumer brands: Endless Summer® Hydrangeas, First Editions® Shrubs & Trees, and Easy Elegance® Roses. Ryan is passionate about connecting people to nature and encouraging home gardeners to enjoy digging in the dirt. He travels the country educating homeowners on how to be successful in the garden and has been featured in publications such as Better Homes & Gardens, HGTV Magazine, Martha Stewart Living, Real Simple, and more. Ryan’s approach revolves around making gardening fun, breaking down barriers, and creating a welcoming space to collaborate. His first book, “Field Guide to Outside Style,” helps home gardeners discover their own style for designing their outdoor space.

David Roberts acquired his master’s degree in horticultural science from North Carolina State University (Dec 2015) with a concentration in ornamental plant breeding. David worked as a graduate student for Dr. Dennis Werner and Dr. Tom Ranney, where he developed a passion for plant breeding and propagation. Bailey Nurseries, Inc. hired David in 2015 to act as the general manager and head plant breeder for Bailey Innovations.  David currently serves as the Director of Plant Breeding for Bailey Innovations where he leads breeding direction and coordinates plant trials from their nursery located in Winterville, GA.
