Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Hydrangeas But Were Afraid to Ask

Sadly, due to Hurricane Helene, our scheduled October speaker, Irene Palmer, had to postpone her talk. Fear not! Four of our wonderful AHS members have agreed to be on a panel to answer your hydrangea questions. Please email your questions to Jennifer Petritz by Wednesday, October 23rd, president@americanhydrangeasociety.org

Ozzie Johnson has spent more than 50 years in horticulture. His life brought him foreign travel especially to Asia and Japan, which is home to our favorite hydrangeas: macrophylla, serrata and paniculata. Ozzie’s association with The Atlanta Botanical Garden provided the opportunity for exploration to collect permitted seeds, including hydrangeas. A natural curiosity about growing plants from seed came from the seeds he collected. Studying hydrangeas that grow in the wild is one of the many ways to help prepare a person for keeping hydrangeas healthy.

Lisa Bartlett has a love for all things and a few rocks. She recently retired from Smith Gilbert Gardens where Lisa was the garden manager for almost ten years. In that time, she brought in as many hydrangea species and cultivars as were available. Lisa also created and curated their most successful exhibit, The World of Wings Butterfly House, using butterflies native to Georgia. It remains Smith Gilbert’s most popular exhibit.

Duane Stone graduated from The Georgia Tech Institute of Architecture in 1984. While he was frequently designing homes, he officially opened his successful design business focusing mostly on residential projects. His keen eye for design helped him to create his own beautiful home garden and some of his fortunate family and friends’s gardens. Duane has written several design articles for the AHS newsletter.

Jeff Potter had his first green house by the age of 12. After graduating with a horticulture degree from UGA in 1982, his extensive career took him all the way to the Georgia State Capitol and the Georgia Governor’s Mansion where he was Executive Horticultural Assistant to First Lady Elizabeth Carlock Harris. His company, Garden Works, launched in 1996. Jeff is a founding member of AHS, the GA Hosta Society, the GA Perennial Plant Association, and the GA Native Plant Society.
