Happy New Year and Greetings from your newly elected President!
I hope the New Year finds you happy, healthy and excited to begin a new year with the American Hydrangea Society. 2019 looks to be a busy and informative year for AHS as we celebrate our twenty-fifth year! Penny McHenry and the founding members began the American Hydrangea Society in 1994. I hope they are proud of their legacy as we continue to learn and study the genus Hydrangea.
Our October 2018 meeting sadly brought to completion Gloria Ward’s two terms as the AHS President. All of us would like to thank Gloria for her loving dedication to our society and all the improvements she has made during her four years as President. We are grateful for her leadership, kindness and her welcoming smile she always gave and gives to each of us. We are not letting her retire though as she will be the 2019 AHS Garden Tour Co-Chair along with Dörte Wohmann-Schmieta.
Our new Officers and Board of Directors who were elected at the October meeting are President Eva Kinney, Vice President Ozzie Johnson, Treasurer Cheri Felton, Secretary Scott Grosse. New Board of Directors for a two year term from October 2018 – October 2020 are Liesl Marmon, Jennifer Petritz and Duane Stone. Current Board of Directors whose terms end in October 2019 are Julie Fitzgerald, Melinda Mischik and Dörte Wohmann-Schmieta.
We also have a few new committee chairs and members. Liesl Marmon has graciously agreed to take over the Volunteer Chair from me and Assistant Editor Jennifer Petritz will be sharing her horticultural expertise helping Editor Sandy Jones with the newsletter. Thank you to all our new Board members for giving their time and dedication to AHS. We are so happy to work along side you.
They say a good garden is one that looks good even in the depth of winter. If you are not happy with your garden’s “bone structure” try looking at photos from our past AHS Garden Tours for inspiration and possible additions to your garden. We have had spectacular gardens on our tours over the years, something for everyone. If you want to see five beautiful gardens in person please mark your calendar for the Twenty-Fifth American Hydrangea Society Garden Tour on Saturday, June 8, 2019
from 9 am until 5 pm, rain or shine. We are hoping Atlanta’s 70.03 inches of rain in 2018 will help produce an abundance of Hydrangeas!
The American Hydrangea Society meets three times each year, the fourth Monday in February, April and October. Our meetings our held at the Atlanta History Center’s Woodruff Auditorium in McElreath Hall. Social begins at 7:00 pm and the meeting at 7:30 pm giving you time to visit and purchase a raffle ticket or five. Parking and the meetings are free but we hope you want to learn more about the genus Hydrangea and become a member. Single membership is $30 and a Household (2) is $40. Membership includes our three newsletters as well as tour tickets.
On Monday, February 25, 2019, please join us to hear our very own AHS member, Gary Starrett, owner of Beulahland Hydrangea Garden in Juliette, GA.
Gary’s title for the evening is “Confessions of a Hydrangist”. I had the pleasure of visiting Gary’s garden in June 2018 and saw first hand his passion for the genus Hydrangea. I even brought a couple of hydrangeas home for my own garden.
The February 25, 2019 General Meeting is the perfect time to renew your membership so you can receive your 2019 Garden Tour tickets at the April 22, 2019 meeting! I look forward to seeing you.
